Around Town: Posillico's whimsical art at Legends
(January 25, 2006) Legends Gallery at 816 Santa Cruz Ave. in Menlo Park will hold two receptions for artists Leo and Isabelle Posillico on Friday, February 3. The daytime reception will be from noon to 2 p.m.; the evening event, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Mr. Posillico creates whimsical mixed-media art pieces. Works from his Word Series and Heart Series will be on display. Proceeds from one of Mr. Posillico's paintings will be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team in Training.
Ms. Posillico creates "one-of-a-kind jewelry, using 18-karat gold combined with pearls, diamonds and gem stones. For information, call Diane Michlig at 322-2284.
Multimedia at Menlo College
Poet, writer and artist Mong-Lan will read from her work and make a multimedia presentation at 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 31, in the Fireside Lounge at Menlo College, 1000 El Camino Real in Atherton.
Ms. Mong-Lan has written two books of poems: "Song of the Cicadas" and "Why is the Edge Always Windy?" Her paintings and photographs have been exhibited in galleries in the Bay Area and, most recently, in the Dallas Museum of Art.

Mars & Venus diet author in Woodside
John Gray, author of "Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus," will be at the Woodside Library at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 9, to discuss his most recent book, "The Mars & Venus Diet & Exercise Solution." A book signing will follow his presentation.
Mr. Gray is the author of 15 books and writes a nationally syndicated column.

Last chance to see horse exhibit
The Woodside Community Museum exhibit, "Horses in Woodside," will end after an open house Saturday, January 28, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In the exhibit are photos and memorabilia documenting the long and varied history of horses in Woodside.
The museum's next exhibit will be about the 50th anniversary of Woodside's 1956 incorporation.
Located in the century-old Mathisen farmhouse at Town Center, at Woodside and Whiskey Hill roads, the museum is open by appointment Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. For more information, call the museum at 851-1294.
World Affairs talk on the rule of law
Thomas Carothers, director of Democracy and the Rule of Law at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, will talk on "Promoting the Rule of Law Abroad" on Wednesday, January 25, at 7:30 p.m., at the Los Altos Public Library at 13 South San Antonio Road.
Dr. Carothers, who has worked in many countries on promoting democracy and the rule of law, will respond to the "freedom agenda" that President Bush announced last year to promote democracy around the world.

Talk: 'Winds of Change' in communities
Don Weden, retired principal planner for Santa Clara County, will talk on Saturday, January 28, about how to adapt local communities to the changing realities of the 21st century.
The program, titled "Winds of Change," will run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Hewlett-Packard Auditorium at 3000 Hanover St. in Palo Alto.
Topics include the effects of population growth, aging of Baby Boomers, increased global economic competition, rising energy costs, and global warming.
The free lecture is sponsored by the Palo Alto Branch of the American Association of University Women.
