The driver of the green 1995 Volvo that struck and killed Portola Valley resident and philanthropist Rodney Smith while he was bicycling on Sand Hill Road on May 25 was Anthony L. Rose, 87, of Woodside, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Mr. Smith, 67, was struck at about 9:40 a.m. Friday on Sand Hill Road -- about a half-mile west of the intersection with Interstate 280, said Capt. Dan Ghiorso of the Woodside Fire Protection District.
Medics from the Menlo Park and Woodside fire protection districts treated Mr. Smith at the scene, but he was pronounced dead at 10:05 a.m., the CHP said. He died from multiple traumatic injuries, said a spokeswoman from the San Mateo County Coroner's Office.
Both vehicles were eastbound. Mr. Smith, who was wearing a bicycle helmet, was thrown about 30 feet ahead of where the car stopped, Mr. Ghiorso said. The bicycle was lightly damaged and found near the car just inside the bike lane, he added.
The CHP had not provided details of the accident by early Tuesday afternoon.
The speed limit at that section of Sand Hill Road is 55 mph, slightly lower than the 58 mph speed of 85 percent of the traffic on that section of the road, said Cedric Novenario of the Traffic Division of the San Mateo County Department of Public Works. The latest traffic survey was done in February. It is unknown how fast Mr. Rose was driving at the time of the accident.
Mr. Smith was retired from positions as chairman of the board, chief executive officer and president of San Jose-based Altera Corp., a maker of programmable computer chips, according to an archived version of the company's Web site.
In 2000, Mr. Smith and his wife Mary gave $1 million to Portola Valley's Open Space Fund in an effort to clean up litter in the town. Mr. Smith was responsible for the "no littering" signs that are at the entrances to the town, said Nancy Thompson, who has been on the Open Space Acquisition Advisory Committee since the late 1990s.
The CHP is investigating the incident and is asking witnesses to call Officer McDonough at 369-6261.
