There will be no tolerance for celebratory gunfire or fireworks within the city of Menlo Park, the police department said Thursday in a press release.
"Discharging a firearm or using -- or possessing -- illegal fireworks within the City of Menlo Park is a serious crime and could cause serious injury or death," said police spokeswoman Nicole Acker.
Reckless discharge of a firearm is a felony and carries a sentence of up to three years in prison, she said.
Use or possession of illegal fireworks is a misdemeanor.
The department asks the public to report unlawful use of firearms or fireworks by calling 330-6300.
