Unlocked vehicles and darkened streets in Menlo Park's Allied Arts neighborhood apparently presented an opportunity to a thief or thieves on Sunday night, Feb. 17.
The Menlo Park police are reporting six incidents of theft -- two for more than $400 -- all phoned in the next day, Monday, between about 8:30 and 11:30 a.m.
More reports of thefts in the Allied Arts neighborhood are coming in today as more people realize that they've been victimized, said Nicole Acker, spokeswoman for the Menlo Park Police Department.
Four thefts were reported in the 200 block of Princeton Road, one in the 800 block of Cambridge Ave. and one in the 800 block of College Ave.
Among the items stolen: a laptop computer and bag, a DVD player, a satellite radio, binoculars, a phone headset and a portable multi-purpose tool.
"We try to tell the public to lock their doors," said Ms. Acker. "I do think people get complacent. It's just a reminder that we need to lock our vehicles, lock our houses. Unfortunately, there are criminals everywhere."
Detectives are investigating the thefts, Ms. Acker said. Meanwhile, police will be patrolling the neighborhood more frequently.
