Menlo Park woman identified in Petaluma crash

Ashley Diane Gillespie, 25, of Menlo Park died Saturday night, Aug 2, when the white 1995 Subaru she was riding in crashed head-on into a redwood tree at about 8:10 p.m. on northbound U.S. 101 just north of Petaluma Boulevard in Petaluma, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Medics pronounced her dead at the scene of the solo-vehicle accident, CHP Officer Juan Leon said in a phone interview.

The driver, Ryan Elmer, 23, of Santa Rosa, was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with major injuries, Mr. Leon said.

The cause of the crash is unknown, he added, but an investigation continues, including the possibility of the influence of alcohol. No arrests were made and there are no charges pending against Mr. Elmer, Mr. Leon said.
