Tonight, Wednesday, March 10, school boards in Portola Valley and Menlo Park are slated to vote on teacher layoffs and other budget cuts for the coming school year.
Flat property tax revenues and cuts in state funding are triggering the projected shortfalls for the 2010-11 school year in both districts. Menlo Park is looking to trim nearly $2 million from its budget, while Portola Valley seeks to cut $550,000 in expenses.
The two districts have something else in common -- parcel tax measures on the May 4 special election ballot that could spare the school districts the worst of the cuts. Portola Valley is asking for a $168 annual tax for a four-year term, and Menlo Park is asking for $178 annually for seven years.
The Portola Valley School District is set to meet at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 10, at Corte Madera School's Room 1001, 4575 Alpine Road in Portola Valley. Go to Web link for the meeting's agenda and staff reports.
