The man who was struck and killed Friday morning, July 5, by a train at the Atherton station has been identified by the San Mateo County coroner's office as Clifford Planchon, 88, of Redwood City.
Northbound Caltrain #313 struck Mr. Planchon as the train passed through the Atherton station at approximately 7:15 a.m., Caltrain spokesperson Jayme Ackemann said.
Caltrain does not stop at the Atherton station on weekdays. The station is at Fair Oaks Lane and Dinkelspiel Station Lane in Atherton.
Passengers on the affected train were transferred to train 217, she said.
Bus shuttles briefly took passengers around the area of the incident, but trains were single-tracking past the scene as of 8:30 a.m., Ms. Ackemann said.
At 9:27 a.m., Caltrain reported resuming normal operations with both tracks back in service. The coroner cleared the scene at approximately 9:30 a.m., Ms. Ackermann said.
"Delays were extensive throughout the system," she said in an email. "Ridership was reported to be lighter than normal for a Friday due to the holiday."
