Residents of the Las Lomitas School District interested in serving a one-year term on the school board have until noon Wednesday, Sept. 18, to apply for appointment to a vacant seat.
As of Monday morning, only one person -- Christy Heaton -- had applied for the position, although a number of people had taken out applications, according to Leticia Gomez of the district.
The new board member will fill the spot vacated by Ann Jaquith, who resigned in August. The term ends in November 2014, and the appointee will have to stand for election if he or she wants to continue serving on the board.
To be eligible to serve on the school board, applicants must live within the school district boundaries, be a citizen of California and a registered voter, and be 18 or older.
Candidates will be interviewed in open session at a special meeting of the school board set for Tuesday, Sept. 24, at an undetermined time. Ms. Gomez said the board has the option of making an appointment at that meeting, but may choose to wait for a future meeting. The board also may schedule a second meeting for interviewing candidates if there are numerous applicants, she said.
