Hawk visits Coleman Avenue

Kelli Wheelwright sent us this photo she took of a hawk on Coleman Avenue in Menlo Park.

She says: "From the research I did, it's either a red-tailed hawk or a broad-winged hawk (which would be less likely)."

Friends tell me that this looks like an immature Red-tail. Sibley, pages 105 & 106 show a decent drawing match. Broad-wing adult has a strongly black & white barred tail (which this bird lacks); the immature Broad-wing has a distinctly white throat.
