Review: 'Magic in the Moonlight'

Two stars

There have long been notable connections between filmmakers and magicians. Houdini became a film star, Orson Welles delighted in performing magic (sometimes on film), and stand-up performers turned actor-directors Steve Martin and Woody Allen have also shown a marked interest in magic and affectionately spoofing it. But while Allen's new film "Magic in the Moonlight" literally has an illusionist in it, the picture figuratively lacks the magic the filmmaker promises.

Many, if not most, of Woody Allen's movies are the same: Older man falls for VERY young and ethereal/flighty waif who could be his daughter. In other words, he keeps making movies that mirror his real life.

To say the least, it's very disconcerting -- so I don't watch them anymore.

Outstanding review, Peter. I saw the move first, then read your review, and you hit it right on the head. Sometimes the art of the review is better than the art being reviewed. That is certainly true in this case.
