Trio allegedly robs, attacks man on bicycle in East Palo Alto

Three males arrested, also found to be in possession of stolen property from burglaries

Three East Palo Alto males, two adults and one juvenile, were arrested Thursday after they allegedly attacked and robbed an elderly man riding his bicycle near University Avenue and Sacramento Street in East Palo Alto.

East Palo Alto police said they received numerous reports of a strong arm robbery in progress around 4 p.m. at the corner of the two streets, with callers reporting seeing the three males attacking the elderly man.

Upon officers' arrival, the three males were seen fleeing on foot down Sacramento Street. They were apprehended after a short pursuit and with the assistance of the San Mateo County Gang Task Force (GTF) and the Menlo Park Police Department.

The three males were arrested based upon evidence linking them to the robbery, police said. They were also found to be in possession of stolen property associated to three residential burglaries and one commercial burglary in East Palo Alto.

The elderly victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The names and photographs of the alleged suspects are not being released due to the ongoing investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed or has any knowledge of this incident is urged to contact the East Palo Alto Police Department by sending an anonymous email to epa@tipnow.org, an anonymous text message to 650-409-6792 or leaving an anonymous voice mail by calling 650-409-6792 or 650-853-8477.

Any idea why the victim was targeted? University Ave in East Palo Alto is a common route for people commuting by bicycle between Facebook and Google.

I'm glad these thugs were caught. How terrible to be an elderly person and be attacked like that. I hope the thugs get more than a rap on the knuckles as seems to be typical these days. I'd also like to see their names published.
