'Plumbers' rob Atherton home while resident distracted

Atherton police say a home on Mesa Court was burglarized on Thursday, Aug. 28, after a man who said he was a plumber investigating a nearby sewage problem talked his way into the house and distracted the owner while another person took valuables.

The man rang the front doorbell at around noon, telling the resident that a sewage problem down the street had made their water undrinkable, police said. After the suspect entered the residence, without permission, he distracted the elderly homeowner by turning on water faucets at various locations inside and outside the home.

While the victim was distracted, another person entered the house through the open front door and took an unknown number of gold pieces and a large diamond from the master bedroom, according to police.

Police said they believe a resident of the home had been contacted at the Sharon Heights Safeway by someone involved in the crime just before the burglary, and she had given the person her home address.

This is the first burglary reported in Atherton involving criminals who distract people while they are at home, police said.

Please, folks, this kind of stuff doesn't need to happen!!!

When someone you don't recognize comes to your door, WITHOUT OPENING THE DOOR, say, "Who is it?" If they say they have to come into your house to check something, say, "Just a minute, please", and, WITHOUT OPENING THE DOOR, call 9-1-1 immediately!!!

Or, if they say they are selling something, or are collecting donations for something, or whatever, if you do not know the person, just say, "No, thank you," and DO NOT OPEN YOUR DOOR -- EVER!!!

I note the story describes the victim as "elderly". Please, family members of the elderly, have a gentle conversation with your beloved, emphasizing the dangers of opening your door to someone you don't know, and then tell them how to proceed if they are ever faced with that situation.

Don't miss out on the discussion!
