Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The Atherton Police Department will give out free glow necklaces to children and their parents on and before Halloween, starting Oct. 30. The necklaces, which glow in the dark for several hours, can be picked up at the front counter of the Police Department, 91 Ashfield Road, or from officers on patrol.

Among the tips offered by the department are these:

● Wear flame retardant costumes.

● Try on costumes before Halloween to allow time for altering and make sure hems are short enough to avoid tripping.

● Use reflective tape on your costume and bags, available in hardware, bicycle, and sporting goods stores.

● Avoid cumbersome masks by using make-up or face paint. Make-up should be hypoallergenic and non-toxic.

● To easily see and be seen, children should also carry flashlights or glow sticks.

● Children should wear well-fitting, sturdy shoes. Mother’s high heels are not good for safe walking.

● Hats and scarves should be tied securely to prevent them from slipping over children’s eyes. If a mask is used, make sure it fits securely and has eyeholes large enough for full vision.

● Cross only at intersections and designated crosswalks. Walk. No running.

● Carry a spare Halloween bag — in case yours breaks or you fill your original one.

● Don’t approach unfamiliar pets or animals.

● Don’t cut across yards and stay out of back yards.

● Follow traffic signals and don’t jaywalk. Always watch for cars backing up or turning.

● Review the “stop, drop and roll” procedure in case your costume catches on fire.

● Don’t eat any candy until it’s inspected for tampering under bright lights. Avoid candy that has loose wrappings, is unwrapped, has puncture holes, or is homemade. Small children should not be allowed hard candy they may choke on.
