The 2013 CIF Northern California basketball playoffs will offer a number of opportunities for eight local teams that begin play this week in Round 2 of the postseason playoffs.

For the Gunn girls, this week offers another chance to prove they have one of the best public school programs in the area.

Fresh from winning its second straight Central Coast Section Division I crown on Saturday, the Titans (19-6) will take a No. 8 seed into Wednesday’s home game against No. 9 Galileo (24-6) of San Francisco at 7 p.m., looking for yet another 20-win season.

The NorCal playoffs also will offer three local teams perhaps some redemption and shots at titles that escaped them while participating in the inaugural CCS Open Division playoffs last week.

The Palo Alto boys, along with the Eastside Prep and Pinewood girls, all dropped back-to-back games against the section’s best — instead of playing for CCS titles in their normal divisions.

All three teams are back where they belong this week for NorCals.

Palo Alto, however, still faces an uphill battle in Division I. The No. 11 Vikings (23-3) must travel to No. 6 De La Salle (24-4) on Wednesday for a difficult opener at 7 p.m. Making their job tougher is the loss of junior center Keller Chryst.

Chryst suffered an ankle injury in a first-round CCS loss to Mitty and will miss the rest of the season. De La Salle, meanwhile, was expecting to play in the Open Division and appeared to be a lock until losing to eventual champ Deer Valley in the NCS Division I playoffs.

The Eastside Prep and Pinewood girls suffered similar fates in the section tournament while facing teams they’ve never played before in the CCS playoffs.

Eastside Prep (21-8) received a No. 1 seed for NorCal Division V play while Pinewood (21-7) for a No. 3. Both earned first-round byes to Saturday’s quarterfinals. Eastside Prep will open at home (7 p.m.) against either No. 8 Urban (23-7) or No. 9 Capital Christian (20-10) while Pinewood will host either No. 6 San Domenico (24-7) or No. No. 11 Ripon Christian (20-7).

Eastside Prep will host throughout the playoffs prior to the NorCal finals on March 16 at American Canyon High, while Pinewood would have to travel if it meets No. 2 Valley Christian-Dublin.

Also competing this week will be the Menlo School and Pinewood boys plus the Menlo School and Sacred Heart Prep girls.

The Menlo boys (20-7), fresh from their first CCS Division IV title since 2009, earned a home game to open NorCals and will face No. 11 St. Mary’s of Berkeley (17-7) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Pinewood (14-11), also coming off a section crown in Division V, will host No. 7 Head Royce of Oakland (24-5) on Wednesday at 7.

The Menlo girls (20-9), who won their first CCS Division IV title since 1995 on Friday, will host No. 12 Moreau Catholic (21-7) on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Sacred Heart Prep (21-9), which lost to Menlo in the section finale, will take its No. 9 seed and visit No. 8 Anderson (19-10), which is near Redding in Shasta County.
