The Elections Office has confirmed victory for Olivia Martinez, one of two incumbents who ran for re-election to the board of the Sequoia Union High School District.
With the final count reported late Thursday afternoon, Nov. 17, Ms. Martinez ended up with 12,659 votes, just 77 votes more than fellow incumbent Lorraine Rumley.
Therefore, Ms. Martinez became the third candidate elected to a four-year term on the board. The other two are challengers Carrie B. Du Bois, who garnered the most votes -- 16,611 -- and Allen S. Weiner, who received 14,669 votes.
A fifth candidate, Larry James Moody, received 9,286 votes.
The Sequoia district board's oversight includes Menlo-Atherton and Woodside high schools, and the board has a dotted-line relationship with the charter high schools, including Summit Prep and Everest.

Posted by Disgusted, a resident of the Menlo Park: Central Menlo Park neighborhood, on Nov 18, 2011 at 12:59 pm FOUR terms on a School Board -- what a disaster. They ought to have terms limits. Let's hope the new Trustees can shove Martinez into the 21st Century and open her mind to progressive initiatives and best practices. She needs to remember that it's her job to be objective and make all decisions based on the best interest of the kids rather than protecting her old ways and old friends.

Ms. Martinez was the first to support chartered schools in the district. She stood up to the thug Pat Gemma. Best wishes to her, she will do a much better job than Lorraine Rumley.

And you've made all the District's schools beautiful. (I'm partial to the remodel at M-A and love how pretty the campus now looks!).
