Several boarding houses served Menlo Park when the city was incorporated on March 23, 1874, after residents complained about drainage problems and the condition of the town's streets. The boundaries included most of present-day Atherton and east to the Bay, absorbing all of what was then called Ravenswood. Photo courtesy Menlo Park Historical Association.

The Menlo Park zoning ordinance still allows boarding houses in many zones. The new El Camino Real/Downtown Specific Plan does not list them as a conditional or permitted use. They are like hotels that serve dinner in as common dining room to the guests who stay for extended periods of time.

Considering the economy, maybe they should be allowed. Don't think many Facebook employees would use them though.

A Boarding House or Bed and Breakfast or Country Inn is a REAL NECESSITY in Menlo Park. All we have are cheap motels or over priced hotels. Nothing comfy cozy and hom like for a good price. love the idea! Good tax base for the town, great for visiting relatives, corporate, student families etc. Come on Menlo Park give it a whirl!

AirBnB is a good start...
