 | Deputies from the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office are on the lookout for a young man accused of theft and of trying to run over a deputy sheriff at the Ladera Swim & Tennis Club at about 2 p.m. Sunday, March 18.
Club staff had been detaining the man on suspicion of stealing from the lockers there, but he escaped and ran outside, according to the Sheriff's Office. The club is at 3249 Alpine Road, just west of the intersection with La Mesa Drive.
A deputy arriving on the scene saw him and tried to stop him, but the man got into his car -- a tan or salmon colored sedan, perhaps a Nissan Maxima or Toyota Camry from the early 2000s -- and "intentionally attempted to run over the deputy," before heading east on Alpine Road and then north on Interstate 280, deputies said.
There were no injuries. Deputies describe the suspect as Caucasian, 5-foot, 6-inches tall, with brown hair and weighing about 140 pounds. At the time, he was wearing a white long-sleeve T-shirt and black pants.
Deputies are asking anyone with information to call Detective Ben Hand at 363-4192 or write to him at bhand@smcgov.org.

There is a surveillance photo here: Web Link

Apparently the people at Ladera Oaks apprehended the kid and the sheriff deputy lost him. Could this be that the sheriff was too out of shape to keep up with the kid? A lot of deputy sheriffs could use a health club or works outs to keep in shape and there have been other incidents where they have lost their perp because they couldn't keep up.

Posted by Neighbor, too, a resident of the Portola Valley: other neighborhood, on Mar 22, 2012 at 7:51 am I've got to agree somewhat with Neighbor. If your job involves running with a bulletproof vest, perhaps you should run with a bulletproof vest on a daily basis. I see the firefighters out running every day....

The picture shows BLACK. The picture looks like every other teenager that lives around here. Probably another spoiled brat whose parents don't keep an eye on him.

Just because you are in superb physical shape doesn't mean someone isn't going to get away occasionally.

Neighbor: I suggest you try running in a bullet proof vest with ten pounds of gear hanging from your belt then come back here and complain about the deputies not catching someone that is totally jacked up on adrenaline and ISN'T wearing a vest and ten pounds of gear. Please, let us know how you do. When I did the job I worked out 6 days a week - 3 days cardio and 3 days weight training. 175 lbs and 6% body fat. Guess what? I wasn't always able to keep up with someone running away. Try it, I doubt YOU can do it.

Posted by Hmmm, a resident of another community, on Mar 24, 2012 at 2:44 pm I will admit I've seen a lot of out of shape deputies. I've also seen some who look to be in shape but admitted that they weren't, really - a lot of coffee, cigarettes & stress at work. But like MV said, even great in shape can lose people - especially if they're younger than you & super adrenalized.
It's over, he got away & either he'll get caught or he won't. I'm glad hte deputy wasn't hit.
