Tonight: Commission may act on Facebook
Campus expansion reviewed

Bookmark and Share
Facebook's proposed campus expansion is once again in the spotlight at the Planning Commission meeting on Monday night, May 7.

The Planning Commission will conduct a review of the project's "final" environmental impact and financial impact reports as well as the recently approved development agreement approved by the City Council. The social networking giant plans to hire up to 6,600 employees at its 1 Hacker Way "East" campus and make improvements to all its properties, including those on the Constitution Drive "West" campus.

Tonight's meeting starts at 7 p.m. in council chambers at the Civic Center at 701 Laurel St. The commissioners will vote on whether to approve the impact reports and forward them on to the council.

The Menlo Park City Council will hold another hearing on the project on Tuesday, May 29.

How come the Finance/Audit Committee didn' t review the Financial Impacts of the Facebook project, but the Planning Commission does?

That's like having the Library Commission review tree removals instead of Environmental Quality.

The Financial Audit Committee members can review the FIR on their own prerogative and then comment to City Council or the Planning Commission. Or they can decide to comment to the papers instead.

What a waste of volunteer resources. That Committee could provide some great insights if used properly. If assigned to review and provide recommendations, they could be very helpful to both the Planning Commission and Council. Can they really just meet and comment? I don't think so. Staff wouldn't or couldn't help them.

This committee could provide input to the downtown plan but they won't be asked. Staff would rather hold tight and council would rather pay consultants.

Nothing is preventing individual Audit Committee members from reviewing the materials that are readily available online and commenting on them. To date they have chosen not to be part of the process.
