Trains moving on northbound track after man killed on San Mateo tracks

Bookmark and Share
A man was fatality struck by a train on the tracks in San Mateo north of the Hayward Park station late this morning (May 30), a Caltrain spokeswoman announced shortly after noon.

In an email bulletin, Caltrain information officer Christine Dunn wrote: "About 11:45 a.m., a person on the train tracks in San Mateo north of the Hayward Park station died after being struck by southbound train #142."

All trains were diverted to the northbound tracks by about 12:20, she said in an update. The 400 passengers on the train that struck the man were able to leave the train at about 1 p.m., after the train was moved to the Hayward Park station.

There were no injuries to the passengers or crew, Ms. Dunn said

There have been eight fatalities on the Caltrain right of way this year. Last year there were 16.

"The official cause of death will be made by the county coroner following a complete and thorough investigation," Ms. Dunn said. "However, the preliminary investigation suggests that the man intentionally placed himself in front of the train."
