Cyclist dies after crash on Kings Mountain Road

Medics from the Kings Mountain Fire Department tended to a 50-year-old man who suffered a heart attack on the scene and died after crashing his bicycle in the 2000 block of Kings Mountain Road around 12:30 p.m. Sunday, July 1, a San Mateo County Sheriff's Office spokesman told the Almanac.
The Sheriff's Office does not have an incident report and thus does not have the victim's identity, place of residence or other details of the accident, including whether he was wearing a helmet, Lt. Larry Schumaker said.
Jim Sullivan, fire chief of the Kings Mountain department, would not provide details on the victim's identity, citing victim privacy laws, but said the man's bike was not significantly damaged.
Two 911 calls from cyclists who happened on to the scene alerted the San Mateo County dispatch center, which called the Kings Mountain medics and an AMR ambulance to the accident, Chief Sullivan said.
In the phone calls, the victim was said to be conscious and breathing, "not completely alert" and "bleeding extensively," deputies said.
While medics were treating the man, he went into "full arrest" and was declared dead at Stanford Hospital, deputies said.
Chief Sullivan said he could not verify that the man's death was a result of the accident.

Posted by Cyclist, a resident of the Menlo Park: The Willows neighborhood, on Jul 3, 2012 at 2:27 pm A very sad story, but it would be nice to know at least a little more. The victim does have some privacy rights but was anybody asked: Did he go off the road? Found on the roadway or in the woods? Was there any sign of another vehicle involved? Indications of malfunction?
Beyond newsworthiness and settling curiosity, these facts would be helpful to others in the community to understand what might have happened and how it might be avoided in the future.

Posted by Ride safe!!!, a resident of another community, on Jul 3, 2012 at 3:49 pm I was at the scene but when I arrived he was already on the ground attended by a follow cyclist. We asked him what happen, he told us he was walking his bike but at that time I thought he was going into shock and/or had a concussion. Just seeing his injuries, I personally did not think it came from a fall from walking the bike BUT if he was having a heart attack... that might explain the "fall". I did not look at his bike in details, not knowing which was his since there were 3 other bikes (2 from follow cyclists helping the victim) but all 3 bikes looked in tact. We tried to keep him alert until help arrived. It is truly a sad story... please ride safe everyone!
