Saturday services for Florence Stuart

Bookmark and Share
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 28, at Ladera Community Church, 3300 Alpine Road in Portola Valley, for Florence Stuart, who died June 4 from esophageal cancer. She was 84.

A Menlo Park resident for 45 years, she lived in Redwood Shores for the past 10 years.

A native of the Detroit area in Michigan, she graduated from the University of Michigan, where she met her future husband, Robert Stuart. The newlyweds moved to Chicago, where she taught elementary school and Mr. Stuart attended dental school. In 1957 they moved to Menlo Park.

During the 1960s Ms. Stuart volunteered at the Allied Arts Guild and gave assistance to immigrants, say family members. She became an expert on the San Francisco Bay ecosystem, writing a definitive work about the Bay for the League of Women Voters. After a divorce in the 1970s, she became a real estate agent, while continuing her volunteer activities, working for prison reform and ending the death penalty, say family members.

Ms. Stuart is survived by four children, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
