Denise Kupperman, a leader in the effort to build a new library in Holbrook-Palmer Park, Bob Roeser, and Jo-Ann Sockolov took out candidate papers from Town Hall today (July 27), the first step in a possible run for Atherton City Council.
Others who have pulled papers are incumbent Elizabeth Lewis and Cary Wiest, who ran unsuccessfully in 2010.
No one has filed papers, which would make them official candidates in the November race for two council seats. The filing period ends Aug. 10.
Ms. Kupperman, the chair of the town's Library Building Steering Committee and a frequent audience member at council meetings, said she is still mulling over whether to run. She plans to gauge community support "to make sure it's a realistic thing to do," she said.
Mr. Roeser could not be reached for comment for this article. At the June 20 council meeting, Mr. Roeser spoke to the council about the need for resurfacing the tennis courts in Holbrook-Palmer Park, indicating he's willing to organize a group to raise private funds for the work.
Ms. Sockolov could not be reached for comment. Her LinkedIn profile says she is president of the Redwood City Education Foundation.
Because her legal last name is Byrne, she will be required to use that name if she stands for election, according to Theresa Della Santa, the town's city clerk and interim city manager.
Incumbent Kathy McKeithen, whose term expires in December, has not stated publicly whether she will run again. Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? See a sample and sign-up for Express.

Posted by Tea leaves, a resident of the Atherton: other neighborhood, on Jul 27, 2012 at 11:26 pm Kathy McKeithen knows better than to try to run again. It would surly result in a humiliating defeat. Ms. Kuperman is closely allied with Ms. McKeithen and would expect the same result.

Positives:
1. She wants to see her projects carried through and knows how to win.
2. As more candidates file, her chances improve.
Negatives:
1. She ran on term limits in 2000 and if re-elected this will be her fourth term. Smith McKeithen might run instead.
2. She has taken a position on the Library in the Park. She can not simply campaign on Transparency, Accountibility, and Responsible Stewardship.

Posted by POGO, a resident of the Woodside: other neighborhood, on Jul 29, 2012 at 11:46 am Kathy McKeithen has contributed years of her life to to serving on Atherton's Town Council. She was elected three times by her neighbors.
If Ms. McKeithen chooses to run again, she has a significant record and her neighbors can easily decide to continue to support her or not. If Ms. McKeithen does not run, a simple thank you for serving three terms would be highly appropriate.
