John French, a horse trainer in Woodside, won the $10,000 International Hunter Derby on Aug. 9 during the Menlo Charity Horse Show in Atherton.
Dr. Daryl Hoffman, at left in the photo, of Atherton, presents the blue ribbon and award to Mr. French.
Dr. Hoffman sponsored the event, which presents the horse and rider with a faster, more challenging course than the standard hunt course. The jumps are more difficult and higher, and are placed to showcase the horse's agility.
Winners qualify for a national championship in 2013, and the winners of that qualify for international competitions.
This event in Atherton was the first International Hunter Derby competition to be held in Northern California, according to the U.S. Hunter/Jumper Association.
