| Woodside resident Avery Corley, 18, won the championship ribbon in the Junior Hunter Classic at the Menlo Charity Horse Show on Aug. 12.
It was the last ride for the equestrian and her horse, Enterprise, as she leaves for UC Berkeley on Aug. 18 and Enterprise will move to a new owner in Florida on the same day.
The intense competition was held at the Circus Club at the end of a week-long horse show. It is a class where all junior hunters compete to qualify for the coveted second round and a ribbon.
It was very close. Avery rode last in the second round (because her scores were highest in the first round) and she had to have top scores to beat the other horse and rider teams.
"It was very nerve-racking watching all the other horses go and do well," said Lori Corley, her mother. "She had to maintain her composure to keep her and her horse relaxed and focused."
She did, and she nailed it, earning top scores from all three judges.
"It was the perfect way to end my junior riding career," says Avery. " I will miss my horse and riding him every day."
