Burgess pool burglars busted
Police find stash of stolen items

Bookmark and Share
Menlo Park detectives on the trail of a stolen cellphone uncovered two suspects and a collection of items stolen from Burgess Pool during the past several weeks.

On Monday, a police officer arrived at the pool to talk to a woman who said her cellphone had been stolen from a locker, according to the report. Earlier in the day someone had reported a woman loitering in the locker area; officers found a phone -- minus the battery -- in her possession, but the serial number didn't appear to match any stolen property.

Still, as Detective Ron Venzon continued to investigate, it turned out the phone was, in fact, the one reported stolen, and warranted further sleuthing.

A search of 19-year-old Vanessa Echevarria's Menlo Park home allegedly turned up a bonanza of illicit goods, including phones, purses, car keys and jewelry. Police said that many of the items matched descriptions of property stolen from the pool locker room during the past several weeks.

Ms. Echevarria and her boyfriend, 21-year-old Ignacio Hernandez of East Palo Alto, reportedly confessed to several thefts and were arrested. Police said they were booked into San Mateo County Jail for conspiracy and burglary along with possession of stolen property.

The investigation continues. Anyone with information on this case may contact Detective Christine Powell at capowell@menlopark.org or call 330-6364; or Detective Venzon at rjvenzon@menlopark.org or 330-6363.

So sad they are already well on their way to a life of crime.

This behavior taints the reputation of our public pool.

They'll probably get off with a hand slap.

How about some free labor - like a year of janitorial work each?

I say turn them over to Tim Sheeper and force them to do mandatory workouts. They'll be too exhausted to steal. And then when they're done with the workouts they can clean the locker rooms.

Ronnie Venzon is a super hero!
