Now that its offense seems in sync, the No. 25 Menlo College football team may want to rethink its upcoming scheduled bye.
The Oaks have scored a combined 156 points in their last three games, not surprisingly all wins. The latest was a 59-13 pasting of visiting La Verne on Saturday in a nonconference contest.
Menlo (4-1) plays again on Oct. 6 when Webber International comes for a visit for a noon kickoff.
Until then, the Oaks have to be satisfied with the direction of their running game, as it set a school mark with 491 yards. Brandon Bell churned out 184 yards on eight carries, an average of 23 yards per tote. He also scored on a 64-yard romp.
Jake Fohn was nearly as impressive, gaining 131 yards on six carries, or an average of 21.8 yards per carry. He scored on an 82-yard run.
Neither of them have anything on Christian Hill-Smith, who touched the ball once and carried it 71 yards for a touchdown.
It was as many points Menlo, who had 635 yards of total offense, has scored in a game in at least 12 years. It's as many yards as they gave gained since 2000.
La Verne scored on its first possession of the game but Vince Snyder went 93 yards on the ensuing kickoff to tie the game.
Devon Jonsson's interception at the La Verne 8-yard line led to Michael Alexander's eight-yard scoring run and Menlo never looked back, scoring 52 unanswered points.
Matt Pelasasa and Alexander each threw a touchdown pass (to each other), ran for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass. Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? See a sample and sign-up for Express.
