Saturday: Eichler documentary screening

Bookmark and Share
Joseph Eichler and his home-design legacy will be under the spotlight with the screening of a documentary film to be shown at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, in the Menlo Park Council Chambers.

"People in Glass Houses: The Legacy of Joseph Eichler" was produced and directed by Monique Lombardelli, who will be on hand to answer audience questions after the screening.

The free program is sponsored by Friends of the Menlo Park Library and presented by the library as part of its monthly community program series.

Homes designed by Mr. Eichler, built between 1947 and 1974 when the innovative builder died, are mostly single story, and feature glass walls and open floor plans.

The exterior typically features flat roofs and vertical 2-inch pattern wood siding, with straight geometric lines. Mr. Eichler was inspired by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, according to a press release about the film.

Eichler homes are found in various California communities, including a number of cities on the Peninsula and throughout the Bay Area.

The 40-minute film includes interviews with nine Eichler homeowners, including residents of Palo Alto's Greenmeadow neighborhood.

Free wheelchair-accessible van service to the event is available for Menlo Park area seniors and people with disabilities. To schedule transportation, call 330-2512.
