A search for two missing San Francisco fishermen is continuing Monday (Oct. 1) in the waters off of the San Mateo County coast.

The men disappeared at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday when a large wave struck their 18-foot Striper boat near the Pigeon Point Light Station, San Mateo County sheriff's Detective Rebecca Rosenblatt said.

The boat, which had four fishermen on board, had departed from a marina near Candlestick Park at about 5:30 a.m., she said.

The two missing men were not believed to have been wearing life vests when the wave hit their boat.

The two other men on board were wearing life vests, she said, and they managed to swim to shore and report the emergency to the sheriff's office.

The U.S. Coast Guard, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office and auxiliary volunteer teams have been searching the ocean waters and the coastline over the past 24 hours, Coast Guard search-and-rescue coordinator Aaron Coffin said Monday.

A Coast Guard helicopter and two 87-foot vessels were scouring the water, while sheriff's units were continuing to search a long stretch of remote beaches in southern San Mateo County.

There was no discussion of calling off the search as of Monday morning, Lt. j.g. Joshua Dykman said.
