A man was shot by a San Mateo County sheriff's deputy Wednesday following a confrontation on railroad tracks in San Jose, San Jose police said.

Police first received a report that the sheriff's deputy had encountered a combative man near the Diridon Caltrain Station at 65 Cahill St. at 5:03 p.m. About 11 minutes later, police were informed that shots had been fired there.

According to police, the deputy found the 29-year-old San Jose resident on the train tracks behaving erratically. He was combative toward the deputy, leading him to call for assistance.

The man then walked north along the tracks away from the deputy with the deputy following. Police said the man threw rocks and debris back at the deputy as he was walking.

Several Santa Clara County deputies then joined the San Mateo County deputy, and they continued following the man, who had walked between 400 and 500 yards north to an area surrounded by a Caltrain maintenance yard.

The man then "displayed threatening behavior" toward the deputies, leading the San Mateo County deputy to shoot the man. Police said that the specifics of the threatening behavior could not be revealed because the investigation is ongoing.

The man was transported to Valley Medical Center by ambulance to be treated for injuries not considered life-threatening, police said. The man will be booked on suspicion of assault-related charges, but the specific charges have not been determined, police said.

The deputies were not injured.

Because the investigation was along the Caltrain tracks, Caltrain service going through the area was temporarily halted, and buses were used instead, Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn said. The tracks were reopened after about an hour, and regular service was resumed by 9 p.m.

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office operates the Transit Police Bureau, which is responsible for policing Caltrain property, including stations, parking lots and the railroad right-of-way between San Francisco and Gilroy.
