Tonight: Planning Commission reviews Menlo Park housing plan

Bookmark and Share
Menlo Park's Planning Commission has one item of regular business on tonight's agenda, and it's a doozy -- a review of the proposed update to the city's housing plan.

The city has no choice about adding enough high-density housing zones to accommodate space for 1,000 units as part of a lawsuit settlement in May over its non-compliance with state law. While the city is not required to actually build the units, the settlement dictates that it must provide incentives for developers to do so.

State law requires cities to assess and plan to meet their fair share of regional housing needs, which includes affordable housing, every seven years. Menlo Park hasn't met the state requirements since 1992, but now only has until Oct. 31 to send a draft update to the state's Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD).

Review the staff report and the proposed update on the city's website.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in council chambers at the Civic Center at 701 Laurel St. The City Council is scheduled to review the update next week on Oct. 22 and Oct. 23.
