Tennis perfection continues for Menlo girls
|
The Menlo School girls' tennis team wrapped up a 10-0 season in the West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division) on Thursday with a 7-0 win over host Sacred Heart Prep.
The score was very appropriate since the Knights have been perfect in league play since 1994. Since that time, Menlo has won a staggering 198 straight league dual matches and 19 consecutive league titles.
The remarkable streak started in the Girls Private School League, moved to the PAL Bay Division and then to the WBAL. Bill Shine has been head coach for 17 of those titles and will take a career mark of 388-72 (at Menlo) into the WBAL Tournament next week on the Knights' courts.
Thursday's win over SHP was as routine as they get for Menlo as none of the matches went to a third set and only one saw a tiebreaker.
While it was Senior Day for the host Gators, Menlo's five seniors -- Laura Gradiska, Giannina Ong, Christine Kvamme and Kayci Lacob -- all saw action.
While Menlo was wrapping up the WBAL Foothill Division title, Castilleja (8-0, 8-3) was doing the same in the WBAL Skyline Division with a 6-1 win over King's Academy at Palo Alto's Rinconada Park.
The Gators were led in singles by Paulette Wolak, April Chien and Celeste Wolyshen with all winning. Castilleja swept the doubles behind the tandems of Olivia Nicholls-Colleen O'Malley, Anna Verwillow-Megan Colford plus Niki Flamen-Rosie Crisman.

Getting a triple-double from Katelyn Doherty, Menlo-Atherton clinched no worse than a tie for the PAL Bay Division title with a 25-23, 25-14, 25-19 victory over host Hillsdale on Thursday. Doherty had 27 assists, 10 kills and 20 digs as the Bears improved to 12-0 in league (22-7 overall) with two regular-season matches remaining.
M-A can win the title outright on Tuesday at home against Mills. Kaitlin Tavarez added 13 digs against Hillsdale while Ally Ostrow finished with 16 digs with Pauli King contributing eight kills and eight digs.
In the SCVAL De Anza Division, Palo Alto moved to within one match of clinching the regular-season title following a 25-21, 25-22, 25-21 win over host Los Altos on Thursday.
"This match took an entire team effort," said Paly coach Dave Winn. "Los Altos played great defense and pushed us to the limit with their balanced attack. We set a season high for digs as a team with 67 in just three sets."
Winn singled out senior Shelby Knowles, who led the way with 20 kills and 16 digs.
"Adding in her tough serving and consistent passing, Shelby really had a great night," Winn said.
Paly junior Becca Raffel added 14 kills and 10 digs, junior Keri Gee finished with 25 digs, senior Sophia Bono contributed 42 assists and sophomore Anna Dukovic added 10 digs.
Palo Alto (11-1, 22-4) can clinch the division crown with a win over visiting Los Gatos on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. The Wildcats are the only team to be Paly in league play since 2010, winning that year and again this season.

Gunn put the finishing touches on a second straight SCVAL De Anza Division regular-season title with an 8-4 victory over visiting Palo Alto on Thursday night. The Titans finished 11-1 (15-5) heading into this weekend's NorCal Championships at Menlo-Atherton and Sacred Heart Prep.
"This was a big win for us," said Gunn coach Mark Hernandez. "It was a great way to finish the regular season, especially because we sent our seniors out on a win on Senior Night. Palo Alto played a great game, and we were able to make a lot of plays in the second half. Our seniors played with a lot of pride, as we would expect from the winningest class in school history. Lauren Lesyna, in particular, had a great game, scoring a season-high four goals."
