It'll be another month of traffic delays for those traveling along Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park.

Pacific Gas and Electric started replacing a 24-inch gas pipeline on Sand Hill Road near Branner Drive in mid-August. The utility company now expects to keep working through Nov. 30, according to a news release, "due to unforeseen site and construction issues."

According to the city's public works director, Chip Taylor, "They encountered soil that had a higher sand content than expected, which takes more time to trench and shore correctly."

While most of the work will take place overnight, daytime construction from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. will also ramp up as street restoration begins, as will weekend work.

Mr. Taylor said "a few final construction activities require large blocks of time, so PG&E will be working on a couple of upcoming Sundays from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the following Monday."

The timing will delay the final paving of the entire half-street involved in the replacement until next year, Mr. Taylor said, now that the rainy season has begun. For now, only the area over the pipeline trench will be repaved.

"The temporary paving once the project is completed will bring the road, where the trench is located, to a good condition that is fairly smooth for the winter, so no major impact to drivers. Then the final paving will be completed in the spring."
