Are you a holiday volunteer? Tell us your story

Do you celebrate the holidays by giving back to the community? Does your family have a tradition of volunteering during the holiday season? The Almanac wants to hear your story.
Practices could be anything from organizing a toy drive to ringing the Salvation Army bell to volunteering at a soup kitchen or encouraging your children to perform a random act of kindness.
Submit short write-ups (100-400 words) on your personal/family tradition, to be published in the Almanac at the end of November.

Posted by Carol, a resident of the Menlo Park: Linfield Oaks neighborhood, on Nov 13, 2012 at 2:14 pm I don't understand the "giving back to the community" term. What does the community give to me that I should give back to it? Truly has me baffled. Honestly. Besides that, it seems to me that somehow "something" is assuming that I am a Christian and am celebrating Christmas and therefore I should "do something" for that reason.

For example, my synagogue collects bags filled with food on Yom Kippur. But I'm assuming Carol is correct and you're only looking at people who celebrate Christmas?
Also, there are plenty of people who volunteer all year round, not just when they're guilted into it because "it's the season for giving." Any interest in truly generous people?
