Oaks take a successful hoops trip to Merced

Lauren Adamek scored 23 points and the 21st-ranked Menlo College women's basketball team remained undefeated in Cal Pac Conference play with a 73-54 victory over host UC Merced on Saturday night.

Jolise Limcaco added 18 points and nine assists for the Lady Oaks (5-0 in the Cal Pac, 19-3 overall), who won their seventh straight and nine of 10 overall.

Menlo stays on the road for its next game, traveling to Pacific Union for a Cal Pac contest at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Men's basketball
ChaRunn Jones scored 18 points to help Menlo top host UC Merced, 76-73, in a Cal Pac Conference game Saturday night.

Keith Bowman added 15 points for the Oaks (2-3, 6-14), who won their second straight following a three-game skid.

Menlo looks to continue its winning streak Thursday when it goes to Pacific Union for a 5:30 p.m. Cal Pac contest.

John Smith scored 12 points and had four assists and Mandip Rai added 11 points.

Baseball
Mother Nature chose not to cooperate with the start of Menlo's season. All four scheduled games against host Vanguard was postponed due to wet field conditions.

The Oaks will see about getting its regular season started on Feb. 5, when they are scheduled to play at Santa Barbara to take on Westmont College. The double header is expected to begin at 11 a.m.

Women's wrestling
Four Menlo wrestlers took to the mats at King College for the Women's Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championship (WCWA).

The Oaks were represented by: Lauren Richardson (109 pounds), Ashley Shuman (116 pounds), Kalin Knight-Alvarez (116 pounds), and Janette Naranjo (136 pounds). Sherylyn Sabado (101 pounds), was set to wrestle in the tournament but did not compete in a match due to injury.

Richardson, who drew a first-round bye, opened with a victory over Frannie Ybarra of Southwest Oregon Community College. She dropped her quarterfinal match to Amy Fearnside of Jamestown College. Richardson finished fourth.


Shuman defeated Jodi Ozaki of Pacific University in their first round match. Shuman then ran in to eventual second place finisher in the 116-pound division, Jacarra Winchester of Missouri Valley College. Winchester won via tech. fall. A win in her first consolation round match allowed Schuman another shot before eventually being eliminated by Victoria Nguyen of host, King College. Shuman ended her tournament run with a 2-2 record.

Knight-Alvarez won her first two matches. She earned a tech fall over Emily Ducote (Oklahoma City University) and an overtime decision victory over Nikkie Brar (Simon Fraser University) before losing to Kayla Brendlinger (King College). She also finished with a 2-2 record.

Naranjo won her first-round match, beating Iris Claudio (Wayland Baptist University) but dropped her next two matches to end her tournament with a 1-2 record.

Menlo, which finished 13th, travel to Colorado Springs on Thursday to compete in the Dave Schultz Memorial Invite.
