Incumbent Kathy McKeithen and newcomer Elizabeth Lewis were elected Tuesday to four-year terms on the Atherton City Council.
With all eight precincts reporting, Ms. McKeithen received 1,429 votes and Ms. Lewis, 1,345.
Ms. McKeithen said she respects the will of voters that placed both her and challenger Ms. Lewis on the council. "She certainly seems to be a hard worker and I hope we can work together for the common good," Ms. McKeithen said of Ms. Lewis.
"I'm humbled and honored by the outpouring of support I received," Ms. Lewis said. "I'm honored to serve the citizens of Atherton. As I've said all along, I will work to find the common ground for the greatest good."
Finishing out of the running for the two seats on the five-member council were David Henig with 1,014 votes and Richard "Dick" Moore, with 1,013 votes.
Sam Goodman, who had dropped out of the race, received 354 votes.
Incumbent Kathy McKeithen spent election night quietly at home with her husband, after working until 8 p.m. She was sanguine about early election results that put her in the lead just before 10 p.m. "I'm feeling fine. I've been feeling fine all along. It'll be nice when it's over one way or the other."
"If I'm elected, I'll do the best job I can," she said.
Dick Moore just returned from his shift at the hospital, watching over his 4-year-old grandson who is recovering from open heart surgery. He confessed that he hasn't been paying attention to election results. When told that he's currently in third place, he said, "That's what I expected."
David Henig went with his wife and children to the Democratic headquarters in Santa Clara when the polls closed. A Barak Obama supporter, he said, "It was a great night."
"As far as the local race, it's not looking very good," he said of returns that showed him trailing.
