'Weekend' aims to bring Sunset pages to life
|
"Discoveries in Your Own Backyard" is the theme of Sunset magazine's annual Celebration Weekend, to be held Saturday and Sunday, June 6-7, at Sunset's headquarters at 80 Willow Road in Menlo Park.
Sunset's editors -- along with food, wine, garden, design and green-living experts -- will share tips, tastings and demonstrations.
Two new Sunset Idea House programs will debut at the event: the Modern Cottage Idea House and the Sunset Outdoor Kitchen.
The cottage has two small modular living spaces in a 350-square-foot structure. It can be used for a guest house, home office or studio, and is small enough to fit in the average backyard.
The new outdoor kitchen is a permanent installation just outside the Sunset test kitchen. Visitors will be able to tour the facility and attend cooking demonstrations.
Another attraction is the Secondhand Sunset booth, where visitors may shop for items from the Sunset prop studio, library, Idea Houses and the editors' own closets. Proceeds will go to charity.
Seminars by Sunset wine editor Sara Schneider will take visitors on a journey down the West Coast to explore six new wine regions.
Among the celebrity chef speakers will be: Jamie Lauren, Top Chef contestant on Bravo television; Sara Snow, host of "Get Fresh with Sara Snow" on the Discovery channel; and Aaron McCargo Jr., host of "Big Daddy's House" and season-four winner of "The Next Food Network Star." Cindy Pawlcyn, executive chef of Mustards restaurant in Napa Valley, will also speak.
INFORMATION: Sunset Celebration Weekend will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 6-7, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at 80 Willow Road in Menlo Park. Tickets, sold at the door, are $15 for general admission, $10 for seniors, and free for children under 12. Visitors will receive $1 off admission if they bike to the event or park at Sun Microsystems, 1601 Willow Road in Menlo Park, and ride a free shuttle to the event. Posted by Not Looking Good, a resident of the Menlo Park: other neighborhood, on Jun 6, 2009 at 8:00 am Are any MP residents getting free (or discounted) tickets this year?
That regular admission price of $15 is pretty darn stiff given the economy.
Also I notice that no mention is made of this event on the city website. Looks like the city is no longer interested in it.

Posted by fairgoer, a resident of the Menlo Park: Linfield Oaks neighborhood, on Jun 6, 2009 at 2:19 pm From my vantage point as a neighbor, the fair is getting its best turnout ever. There were throngs of people waiting to get in when it opened and long lines at the gate later. Our neighborhood is full of cars.
Nearby neighbors get free tickets because the fair is a major inconvenience for us. I had a hard time getting out of the neighborhood this morning. I really don't understand why people pay so much money to go to it, but for free, it's an okay way to spend a few hours.
