Menlo Park Fire Protection District firefighters woke up early to place 343 American flags at three local fire stations this morning to commemorate the sacrifice of firefighters in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, fire Chief Harold Schapelhouman said.

Each of the 343 flags symbolize a firefighter who died in rescue efforts at the World Trade Center in New York City, according to Schapelhouman.

Menlo Park firefighters started putting the flags out at the fire stations at about 5 a.m.

The flags are located at Station 1, located at 300 Middlefield Road in Menlo Park, Station 2 at 2290 University Ave. in East Palo Alto, and Station 4 at the corner of Valparaiso Avenue and Alameda de Las Pulgas in unincorporated West Menlo Park.

Schapelhouman said the fire protection district has raised enough money to place the flags at five of its seven stations next year, and will have them at all seven stations in 2011 for the 10th anniversary of the attacks.

"All gave some; some gave all."

Thanks for remembering and honoring their sacrifice.

Thank you for keeping 9/11 a day of remembrance and not changing it to a day to volunteer.

I agree that it is wonderful to remember and I was moved by the display. However, I don't understand why it is objectionable to also become a day of service as alluded to by Jan. What better way to honor the sacrifice of those who died on 9/11 than to give back to our communities in some way?

Hmm, navel-gazing vs. an opportunity to make the world a slightly better place, in honor of the heroes who gave their lives to make the world a better place. I know which one I'd choose!
