Tonight: Candidates backing charter schools answer questions on school board election
|
A Q-&A session on the election for two seats on the Sequoia Union High School District's five-member governing board is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, at the Alpine Hills Tennis & Swim Club at 4139 Alpine Road in Portola Valley. The public is invited.
Only two of the six candidates -- Atherton resident Bob Ferrando and Menlo Park resident Chris Thomsen -- were invited because, according to forum organizer Andrew Thompson, the two have "clearly expressed" support for charter high schools as well as public education in general and the need to improve graduation rates.
Both Mr. Ferrando and Mr. Thomsen have children at Summit Preparatory Charter High School in Redwood City. Mr. Thomsen also has a son at Menlo-Atherton High School. Mr. Thompson raised funds for Summit Prep for several years.
The guest list is likely to include a speaker representing Summit Prep or its recently opened sister school, Everest Public High School.
The meeting, Mr. Thompson said, is meant to inform voters on the issues and specifically about charter schools. Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? See a sample and sign-up for Express.

Posted by jim watson, a resident of the Menlo Park: other neighborhood, on Oct 17, 2009 at 8:00 pm I have listened to all the candidates and it is clear that both Bob Ferrando and Chris Thomsen are the two strongest candidates. It is clear that they both want to manage the budget and keep successful educational options availible to the all high school students in our comunity. The current board is in need of strong, fair and honest leadership. Ferrando and Thomsen are troubled by the way the current budget is being managed or lack of management. They call for transparency and fairness not what is currently happening. They also support the very successful charter school Summit and the new charter Everest. They both see the success of these schools as an opportunity not a threat. Two frightening candidates are Sarver and Chang-Kiraly. They are happy to wast tax payer money, lack character and are willing to keep the suhsd just the way it is. They are unethical and dishonest. We need a positive change and Ferrando and Thomsen are the two who deserve your vote.
