Cadet Matthew Fitzgerald, son of Sarah and Cliff of Menlo Park, has completed six weeks of cadet basic training at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Matthew, who entered West Point June 29, received instruction in first aid, mountaineering, hand grenades, rifle marksmanship, and nuclear, biological and chemical training.

A graduate of Menlo-Atherton High School, he plans to graduate from West Point in 2013 and be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
