Vikings triumph in first week of playoffs

This report is from Adam Greenlow of Menlo Park, a player on the Pee Wee Vikings team. He is a seventh-grader at St. Raymond School. All players named are with the Vikings.

Menlo-Atherton Vikings football teams were victorious in the first week of the Peninsula Pop Warner conference playoffs, held Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. Below are game summaries:

The Mitey Mites, who went undefeated during the regular season, shut out Redwood City 49ers 18-0 at Woodside High School in the Mitey Mite Super Bowl. This was their final game of the year. Keyshawn Ashford scored two touchdowns, one for 40-yards and one for 70-yards. Floyd Gazaway punched one in from two yards out. The Mitey Mites were coached by Steve Stenstrom, a former 49ers quarterback and Stanford football standout.

The Pee Wees advance into the next round with a 26-16 win over the Sunnyvale Black Knights at Peterson Middle School in Sunnyvale. Memo Teu scored on runs of 40, 50, and 10 yards. Benjamin Burr-Kirven scored on a 40-yard run. Charlie Roth had many tackles behind the line of scrimmage. David Richardson and Austin Wilson stripped the ball from the opponents at critical points in the game.

The Junior Midgets won 36-6 and advanced to the next round of the playoffs. They played the Berkley Jr. Bears of Oakland Technical High School at Ernie Raimondi Field in Oakland. The game was an offensive blowout. Alex Andrighetto scored on a 40-yard touchdown run, kicked three points-after, and made an interception. Isiah Nash crossed the goal line. Matt Odell had a 40-yard touchdown and a 50-yard catch that setup Malcom Gates to score a 10-yard touchdown. Malcom put points on the board again with another touchdown. Keesean Johnson had a great game on defense. Vike Talimalie and Skyler Taulapapa had many sacks.
