Second $50,000 match offered for Haiti relief
Initial drive netted $50,000 in donations in less than a day

Share
A local drive to raise $50,000 to help victims of the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti has been accomplished, the Silicon Valley Community Foundation in Mountain View announced Friday.

Now, a second $50,000 drive is underway.

The first campaign, spurred on by a matching grant from the Irene S. Scully Fund, began Wednesday and was met in less than 24 hours, raising a total of $100,000.

"I am pleased that our donors have shown such great leadership and generosity. They sparked the creation of this fund to help Haiti in the wake of this enormous human tragedy," said Emmett D. Carson, CEO and president of the Community Foundation.

The new campaign is driven by The Lieve Roelandt Foundation, which is a part of the Community Foundation. The new challenge means that if another $50,000 is donated by community members, every dollar will be matched. Taken together, the two matching funds and donations from the community would raise $200,000.

Roelandt said she hopes the response to her matching challenge will be as swift as the response was to the initial challenge.

The funds will be given to organizations working to provide critical assistance to help Haiti recover, following the worst earthquake there in more than 200 years.

Those include Save the Children, World Vision, Partners in Health and American Red Cross.

Carson said the donations from community members have come in all sizes.

"We have received donations both large and small. We've heard from students in our region who want to help by pooling small contributions and from donors who want to make large gifts," he said.

The Irene S. Scully Family Foundation in Greenbrae, as a part of the Community Foundation, focuses primarily on the Bay Area but became interested in Haiti through its work with the What If? Foundation, according to spokeswoman Kathleen Maloney.

"Of course there is immediate need in Haiti. But the needs in Haiti go so far beyond immediate," Maloney said in a press statement.

"Unfortunately, sometimes it takes a tragedy to highlight needs that have existed for some time. I hope this provides and opportunity for us to help Haiti now and in the long term."

Donations are being accepted online through www.siliconvalleycf.org, donate@siliconvalleycf.org or 650-450-5444. Checks also can be mailed to Silicon Valley Community Foundation, 2440 West El Camino Real, Suite 300, Mountain View, CA, 94040, attn: "Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund."

Silicon Valley Community Foundation serves San Mateo and Santa Clara counties and has more than $1.5 billion in assets under management and 1,500 philanthropic funds.
