Officer catches alleged burglar in his home

By Bay City News Service

A 19-year-old man was arrested Monday morning on suspicion of trying to burglarize the North Fair Oaks home of a police officer, a sheriff's lieutenant said today (March 16).

Sheriff's deputies responded to a home in the 3400 block of Spring Street in unincorporated Redwood City shortly before 10 a.m. Monday and found the off-duty officer detaining the teen, San Mateo County sheriff's Lt. Ray Lunny said.

The victim said his barking dogs had awakened him that morning and their unusual tone prompted him to grab his personal gun and begin checking the house, according to Lunny.

He found an intruder, later identified as Rodolfo Maldonaldo, standing inside near the kitchen and ordered him to stop, Lunny said.

Maldonaldo, however, opened a glass door and ran out of the house into the backyard, Lunny said.

The officer chased Maldonaldo and tackled him on the back lawn. He then brought the teen back into his home and called 911.

Maldonaldo was arrested on suspicion of residential burglary and booked into San Mateo County jail.

Lunny declined to say which police agency the officer works for, but said he does not appear to have been specifically targeted.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call sheriff's Detective Saul Lopez at (650) 363-4347 or the sheriff's office anonymous tip line at (800) 547-2700.
