Marian Wright Edelman comments on diversity issue in Menlo Park City School District

Marian Wright Edelman, president of the Children's Defense Fund, discusses in a May 28 online post the recent debate in the Menlo Park City School District over whether to suspend the district's participation in the court-ordered Tinsley program, which permits a set number of students in the Ravenswood district to transfer to nearby districts, including Menlo Park.
The option was considered as a way to cut costs due to budget problems, but the school board rejected it.

In the discussion of whether to suspend the enrollment of students under the Tinsley program to help balance the district budget, Mr. Ranella did not also suggest the suspension of the enrollment under the Allen Bill. Allen Bill Transfers allows for the enrollment of the children of district employees in MPCSD schools even if those employees do not live with in the school district boundaries. Surely if suspending the Tinsley program would help MPCSD balance its budget, suspending the Allen Bill transfers would also help.
Why didn't Mr. Ranella also suggest suspending Allen Bill transfers?

Posted by Sir Topham Hatt, a resident of the Atherton: West Atherton neighborhood, on Jun 2, 2010 at 11:59 am The key difference with the Allen Bill transfers is that program is a key perk for attracting and retaining the best possibl teachers to the district. The ability to have ones kids on the same campus or at least in the same district helps draw great teachers from all over the Peninsula, so it is a possible net add to the overall school environment despite the added cost that these students represent.
The Tinsley program is a net drain on the system, with no benefit for the district to offset the added costs. It is a relic and should be ended immediately.
