Major injuries in another bike vs. car collision

Bookmark and Share
In the second vehicle vs. bicyclist collision on Sand Hill Road in less than a week, a bicyclist was taken to the hospital with major injuries after colliding with a car on Monday, May 28. The accident happened at the intersection of Sand Hill and Portola roads in Woodside.

Debra Weil, 51, of Menlo Park was taken to Stanford Hospital with injuries that were major but not life-threatening, said Lt. Ken Jones of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

Weil was riding a bicycle on Sand Hill Road when she struck the passenger-side door of a car driven by William Dempsey of Portola Valley, he said. Mr. Dempsey, who was traveling eastbound, was turning left onto Portola Road, Lt. Jones said.

On Friday, May 25, Rodney Smith, 67, of Portola Valley was killed as he was riding his bicycle on Sand Hill Road just west of Interstate 280. He was struck by a vehicle driven by Anthony L. Rose, 87, of Woodside.

The May 28 accident that injured Weil is still under investigation, and not all of the four witnesses have been interviewed yet, Lt. Jones said.

"The weather's nice, and there are more bikes out there and more traffic," he said.
