Menlo Park gas leak due to house demolition
Someone forgot to have PG&E shut off gas and electricity service

Failure to have PG&E turn off electricity and gas to a home about to be demolished resulted in a gas leak that dissipated into to the atmosphere with no fire, PG&E reported Jan. 12.
Initial reports that there was a gas-main leak and possible fire drew firefighters from the Menlo Park Fire Protection District to 1315 Middle Ave., near Hermosa Way, shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 11).
But the leak was from a small gas pipe in the house that was broken during the demolition work, according to Joe Molica of PG&E.

Posted by Bob, a resident of the Menlo Park: Central Menlo Park neighborhood, on Jan 12, 2011 at 3:16 pm One would think a house demolition would require a city permit and as part of that permit the city dept would require the turning off of gas and electric to the property and that city inspectors would visually verify that prior to letting the actual demolition begin.
Once again our city gov't not at work.
Hopefully the demolition contractor is licensed and insured - oh but gee the city says it's not responsible for checking to see if a contractor is properly licensed.

Posted by Not a PG&E fan, a resident of the Menlo Park: Sharon Heights neighborhood, on Jan 13, 2011 at 1:32 pm We waited NINE months for PG&E crew to show up and did a FIFTEEN minutes of work to shut off the Gas and Electric before the demolition permit was issued. The paper work was reportedly no where to be found in their system and had to resubmit 4 more times. PG&E moves their employee around, some times one person is better than another, and you can always keep your fingers cross and hoping the person supervising your neighborhood is doing their job. We all know what the consequence is like when their employees are not doing their job right. t
