Woodside High's junior Chris Waschura won both the 1,600- and 800-meter titles at the Central Coast Section Track and Field Championships Friday night at Gilroy High to earn a trip to the state meet. A resident of Portola Valley, he is the first junior to sweep the middle distance races in Central Coast Section championship history, winning with times of 1:56.61 and 4:19.00.
He had only an 80-minute rest between the events.
Waschura was the only guy at the CCS finals this year to get two gold medals in individual events.
He holds Woodside High record for the 800m and the 1,600m and was on the teams that have the Woodside relay records for the distance medley and 4x800m relay.
Waschura will be competing in the state meet for the second time. The state event will be held June 3-4 at Buchanan High in Clovis.
He also has qualified to represent Woodside High School in the New Balance Track Outdoor Nationals in North Carolina in mid-June.
