George Ellis Schiel, 88, of Redwood City, California, died on Thursday January 24, 2013.
He was born to the late Delbert and Rose Schiel on October 22, 1924. George graduated from Sequoia High School and served in the United States Army from 1943-1946, during World War II.
George married Aileen Marchi in August 1949. He worked in the shoe business as the proprietor of the former Schiel Shoe Service of downtown Redwood City, a business passed on from his father.
George was an active parishioner and volunteer at St. Denis Catholic Church, volunteer at Veterans Memorial Senior Center, and member of the SIRS Club and The American Legion, of Redwood City.
George was a true lover of the outdoors, and enjoyed camping at Silver Lake, in the Sierra Nevadas, for more than 60 continuous years.
George is survived by his wife Aileen Schiel, children Matt Schiel, Jan Fletcher, and Larry Schiel, and grandchildren Ryan Fletcher and Adam Schiel.
The viewing will be held on Thursday at 1:30pm at St. Denis Catholic Church in Menlo Park, with Mass at 2:00 p.m. Private burial service will be held on Friday at Skylawn Memorial in San Mateo.
