Les made his transition peacefully at home following a long period of illness. A 1949 graduate of University of California at Berkeley where he received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, he was a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honors Society and the Pi Tau Sigma International Mechanical Engineering Honor Society.
From 1944 to 1946, Les took a hiatus from his university studies to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II, attaining the rank of Captain in the 3rd Infantry Division, 10th Engineer Combat Battalion. During his military career he received multiple decorations and citations, including the Silver Star for Conspicuous Gallantry in Action and the Distinguished Unit Badge as Company Commander. His unit also received the Croix de guerre citation.
Soon after leaving the military, Les survived a near-fatal glider accident and spent months in rehabilitation learning to walk again.
Les went on to build a career in research and development for the defense industry, eventually founding PulsePower Systems, Inc., where he served as President for more than 20 years. Les later consulted to defense companies, helping develop advanced satellite and missile weapons systems for the Department of Defense.
He held 20 U.S. and foreign patents covering liquid propellant guns and erosion jet drills. Les was a member of the American Rocket Society to advance the science of rocket and jet propulsion, the American Defense Preparedness Association, and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
Les was born in Fresno, CA, the only child of Lester Curtis Elmore, Sr. and Leona Kilday Elmore, both of whom preceded him in death.
Surviving him are his wife Sheri of Portola Valley, Califonia, his daughter Paula of San Francisco, CA, his son Stephen (Kristina) of Austin, TX, and his two grandchildren, Jean-Luc and Geneviève Elmore of Austin, TX.
