All of the conditions were present for the ensuing tragedy: an unlit road, no stop signs, no guard rail on a curve, too little police presence, end of the school year, two young males, excessive speed, and alcohol.
It is a sad commentary that Portola Road, which used to be rural and isolated, has become a popular drag strip at night and a speeder's heaven during the day. There is no price that can be put on human life, and if we truly believe that it takes a village to raise a child, let's look at the cost: a new town center — $25 million; proactive safety measures on Portola Road — $0.00.
The time is ripe; let's do what it takes to bring back a feeling of safety to our town.
