Caltrain plans fare hike on Jan. 1

Starting Jan. 1, 2009, it will cost another 25 cents to ride Caltrain to help cover the rising price of diesel fuel, a Caltrain spokesperson said.

The Joint Powers Board for the Peninsula Corridor voted recently to increase the base fare by 25 cents, and to adjust multi-ride tickets and passes accordingly.

The increase will generate approximately $943,500, the spokesperson said. The fare last rose in April 2007.

The board also approved replacing a 10-ride ticket with an 8-ride ticket, probably in March 2009.

There have been problems with the cutting device on the ticket validating machines for the 10-ride ticket; the 8-ride ticket only needs to be stamped, not cut, according to the press release.

The discount of approximately 15 percent on the 10-ride ticket will carry over to the 8-ride ticket. So will the option to purchase a monthly parking permit with the purchase of two 8-ride tickets.

I just attempted to locate a SamTrans bus stop near my MP office. How on earth can anyone make sense of those "maps" printed on the bus schedules. I've never seen such a useless mess in my life! Would it kill them to include a cross street every now and again?

No wonder our local public transit can't make any money from the fare box. If you can't find the bus, you can't pay the fare!

So who still believes in the $50 trip from San Francisco to LA now?
